Bienvenidos al Tortugal!!

Tortugal Hotel & Marina

About Us:
Tortugal. It means home of the turtles. It means tranquility, beauty, cool bungalows and great food. It means a great place to tie up your boat. It's a dream of a place, located in a country filled with beauty.

We're not really sure what it means to our dog Fred, shown below... although we think he knows a good thing when he sees it.

Facilities & Services:
Tortugal is a meeting place of land and water travelers. Located at the headwaters of the Rio Dulce, north of the town of Fronteras, Tortugal is situated on a river island. There are no roads to Tortugal.

It is blissfully quiet here. Tie up your boat. We have the finest marina facilities on the Rio. Our boat technicians will gladly take care of anything you need.

Perhaps you have just gotten off a 9 hour bus ride from Belize? Take the 5 minute boat ride upriver from the Fronteras municipal dock. Step up to the dock and feel the travel weariness you brought along melt away.

Sailors can relax, drink in the comforts of landlubbers while we take care of their vessel.

Backpackers and travelers can stay in our thatch-roofed bungalows, which are tastefully decorated and provide a quiet spot surrounded by forest and river.

Of Special Note:
The difference is in the details.

At Tortugal we pay attention to the little things, like making you feel comfortable, welcomed, so you can pay attention to enjoying yourself.

Have a healthy, fresh meal at our open air restaurant which offers panoramic views of the river, from the Castillo San Felipe to the distant hillsides. Our kitchen offers fresh seafood, local delights and daily European and American specials. Step up to the bar for a fresh squeezed orange juice or a melon smoothie, a latte, a cold Guatemalan beer or a glass of sauvignon blanc.

Upstairs in our Clubhouse you can shoot pool or play darts, check e-mail with our high speed internet, watch satellite TV or peruse the library. We also offer a homey, dockside Ranchito complete with a propane barbeque, picnic tables, hammocks and a second library.

~ Take a swim, the water is clean here.
~ Climb into one of our kayaks, free to our guests, and paddle to our neighboring 150-acre teak and mahogany hardwood forest.

...or simply sit and watch the river pass...

How to find us.
Tortugal or bust!

How to get to Tortugal (without swimming)

Sailing or motoring in from the Caribbean: Head up river from Livingston through the canyon. Navigate across the Golfete and then enter the Rio Dulce itself. You'll eventually find yourself approaching the Rio Dulce Bridge. Sail under the bridge and continue up river about a kilometer where you'll see us on the right side.
