The Jungle Lodge may well be Guatemala's most exciting hotel – without a doubt it is the country's most famous.

Booking a room at the hotel usually means taking a tour package. If the hotel has availability they might rent rooms, but they prefer to sell packages.

Fifty years ago the government of Guatemala gave land to Antonio Ortiz Contreras to build a hotel right in the heart of what would eventually become the Tikal National Park.

Archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania had started the Tikal Project. They needed room and board while working on the site. It was little more that a couple of thatched huts carved into the jungle.

Times have changed. The thatched roofs are still there and the jungle certainly hasn't disappeared, but the hotel itself has developed into a well appointed establishment with all the amenities the modern traveler requires.
