A slide show of Copan
For more than two thousand years – from the Early Preclassic period right through to the Postclassic – Copan was a major kingdom in the Mayan world. At its peak in the Classic period Copan ruled as many as 25,000 people, with 6,000 living in the city itself.
The modern world first learned of Copan in John Lloyd Stephens' book Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatán, published in 1841.
