Birds of the Maya
There are over 10,000 species of birds in the world. About 10%, or 925, have been seen in the U.S. and Canada, with roughly the same (1,000) in Europe. By far the largest concentration of bird species are found in South America, with over 3,200 species. In Colombia, Bolivia and Peru the species count for each country tops 1,700. Guatemala has just over 700, or nearly 80% as many birds as are found in all of North America... in a land area the size of Ohio.
The huge numbers of species in the northern countries of South America and in Central America is due in most part to the collision only three million years ago of the North and South American land masses. Not surprisingly, this "new" Central American land-bridge has become one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet by area. Neo-Arctic meets Neo-Tropic for the first time in an area the size of Spain. Insects, plants, bacteria, molds, mammals, trees and birds native to each continent merged into an entirely new zoologic phenomena... Central America.
Due to the existence of rain forests, deserts, highlands and volcanoes, Guatemala, has some of the finest birding and some of the most beautiful birds in the world.
